Serious crash closes stretch of A38 in Devon

A stretch of the A38 was closed in Devon for hours after a serious crash.

The air ambulance was called to the scene on Splatford Split in Kennford at around 11.15am on Wednesday.

Police were called to reports of a car having hit the central reservation and it was later reported that two vehicles had been involved.

One driver has been taken to Derriford with life-threatening injuries and the other is at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital with serious injuries.

A child was also injured and has been airlifted to Southampton Hospital.

There was heavy traffic in the area and it was affecting anyone travelling in the area during the busy half-term week.

Delays were being reported as being between 30 to 50 minutes.

The road has now reopened and officers are continuing to investigate.

"Police were notified at around 11.15am to reports of a single car in the middle reservation on the A38 on Splatford Split in Kennford.

"It was further reported that a collision had taken place between two cars.

"The driver of the first car has been taken to Derriford hospital with injuries currently being treated as life threatening.

"The driver of the second car sustained serious injuries was taken to RD&E Hospital via land ambulance.

"The passenger of the car is a child and has been taken to Southampton Hospital via Air Ambulance with injuries not thought to be life-threatening or changing.

"Families have been made aware. 

"The Northbound carriageway has been reopened. The road is about to be reopened Southbound.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

Devon and Cornwall Police

At one point there was almost three miles of congestion back to the M5 and traffic was being diverted onto the A30.

"A38 Westbound closed, queueing traffic due to accident investigation work from M5 J31 (Okehampton turn off, Devon) to A380 (Splatford Split, Kennford). Congestion to the M5 J30 (Exeter / Service Areas).

"Very slow traffic through Kenton and Starcross. Also patches of congestion between Whiddon Down and Bovey Tracey.

"The road remains closed following a serious accident involving two cars that happened around 11:15."
