Driver 'critical' after serious crash on the A38

A driver is believed to be in a critical condition after a crash on the A38 in Devon.

The casualty was found in the road after two cars collided at the Splatford Split.

A child from the second vehicle was airlifted to hospital on Wednesday morning.

However, police no longer believe their injuries are life-threatening.

The collision caused long tailbacks, stretching back to the A30 and M5.

Devon and Cornwall Police want to hear from anyone who saw something at around 11.15am.

"At approximately 1114hrs on Wednesday the 23rd of October 2019, a two-vehicle collision occurred on the A38 at Splatford Split, Exeter.

"The collision occurred in lane three at the junction and resulted in one driver the only occupant of the first vehicle being located out of the vehicle in the carriageway with serious injuries. 

"This driver was taken to Derriford Hospital and is in a stable but critical condition.

"The other vehicle involved had an adult driver who was taken to Exeter RDE Hospital, and is currently recovering well, and a child who was flown to Southampton Hospital with serious injuries, though later downgraded as believed not life-threatening.

"The road was closed to allow collision Investigation and Road clearance. 

"The police would like to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity and witnessed the collision or may have dashcam footage of the incident.

"Officers from Devon and Cornwall Roads Policing Team attended and carried out a detailed scene examination".
