Heavy rain and gales set to batter Cornwall?

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 7:04am 24th October 2019. (Updated at 7:14am 24th October 2019)

It is feared heavy rain and gales could batter the coast of Cornwall.

South West Storm Chasers has posted a weekend weather alert on social media.

The group says gusts of up to 50mph could lash the Duchy from Friday, lasting until early on Saturday morning.

It also warns downpours could be on the cards until Saturday lunchtime.

The Met Office has issued two rain warnings for Friday and Saturday but, at the moment, they do not cover Cornwall.

You can check the latest weather warning across the UK here.

"Please be advised that we are expecting a weather system to push in over the next couple of days bringing with it some strong winds during Friday and heavy rain on Saturday.

"The winds will be at their strongest on exposed Southwest facing coasts and hills where we could see gusts of up to 50mph.

"These strong touching gale force winds will be felt from 10:00am Friday and continue through until Saturday morning, easing from the West during the early hours.

"Then we are looking at the second advisory which is for a pulse of heavy rain.

"The heaviest will be on Saturday morning between 08:00 and 11:45 (subject to change on timing) but could still be affecting parts of Somerset and Dorset until around 13:00 before becoming more patchy for the remaining of the day.

"We could see 10mm to 15mm widely and 15mm to 30mm locally which is enough to cause some issues across parts of the south-west

"The patchy rain we are left with from early afternoon, should tend to move away and dry up from about 17:00 across parts of Cornwall and Devon and the rest of the region during the first half of the evening.

"This isn't a warning but an advisory to be prepared for possible disruption, especially regarding the strong winds.

"After all the rain of the last few weeks, making the ground saturated and unstable, this in turn could possibly bring down some trees, causing debris on some of the road networks.

"Please drive to the conditions of the roads!"
