The Met Office has issued a 24-hour weather warning for torrential rain, in Cornwall spanning two days.

Forecasters say heavy downpours are expected to hit areas north and east of St Austell, Truro and Newquay.

The yellow alert will be in force from 3pm on Friday until 3pm on Saturday, with the risk of flooding.

Strong winds are also on the cards, with gusts of up to 50mph on the coasts and hills.

What can we expect?

  • Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely
  • Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer

The Met Office says 80-90mm of rain could fall on high ground, especially Dartmoor, Exmoor and Bodmin Moor.

Forecasters are also predicting strong winds, with gusts of up to 50mph on the coasts and hills.

What is the forecast?

"Rain is expected during Friday and Saturday and this is likely to be heavy over high ground, particularly parts of Dartmoor, Exmoor and Bodmin Moor.

"Many places within the warning area will see relatively small amounts - 5-10mm of rain, but over high ground some places may see 80-90mm.

"This will be accompanied by strong winds which could reach 50 mph over coasts and hills".
