Risk of flash flooding as torrential rain hits Cornwall

Published by Emma Carton at 7:43am 25th October 2019. (Updated at 7:47am 25th October 2019)

There is a risk of flooding as a band of torrential rain sweeps towards Cornwall.

A 24-hour weather warning, spanning two days, kicks in from 3pm on Friday afternoon.

It will be in force until 3pm on Saturday, for areas north of St Austell, Truro and Newquay.

The Met Office says winds of up to 50mph look set to batter the coasts and hills as well.

Scroll down to track the band of weather heading for the south-west, hour by hour.

What can we expect?

  • Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely
  • Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer

The Met Office says 80-90mm of rain could fall on high ground, especially Dartmoor, Exmoor and Bodmin Moor.

That carries the risk of flash flooding, however the Environment Agency is yet to issue any flood warnings.

Forecasters are also predicting strong winds, with gusts of up to 50mph on the coasts and hills.

What is the forecast?

"Rain is expected during Friday and Saturday and this is likely to be heavy over high ground, particularly parts of Dartmoor, Exmoor and Bodmin Moor.

"Many places within the warning area will see relatively small amounts - 5-10mm of rain, but over high ground some places may see 80-90mm.

"This will be accompanied by strong winds which could reach 50 mph over coasts and hills".
