Torrential rain warning ramped up for Cornwall

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 11:30am 25th October 2019. (Updated at 8:35am 26th October 2019)

A weather warning for torrential rain has been ramped up to cover the whole of Cornwall.

The 24-hour alert is in place from 3pm on Friday through until 3pm on Saturday.

Heavy rain is expected which could spark flooding.

The Met Office says winds of up to 50mph look set to batter the coasts and hills as well.

What can we expect?

  • Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely
  • Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer

"Rain is expected during Friday and Saturday and this will be heavy at times, especially over high ground.

"Many places within the warning area will see 10-20 mm of rain. However, over high ground some places may see 80-90 mm - for example across Dartmoor and Exmoor.

"There is also the potential for shorter lived, more intense spells of rain to occur almost anywhere, perhaps giving 30-40 mm in 3 hours or less in some places.

"The rain should clear from the northwest by early afternoon. Rain will be accompanied by strong southwesterly winds with gusts reaching 55 mph, especially over coasts and hills.

"The strong winds may lead to significant leaf fall which could contribute to a higher risk of flooding."
