A stretch of the main road between Falmouth and Truro has reopened after an "unstable tree" forced its closure.

Cornwall Council says it had to be shut as an emergency so that the tree, near The Norway Inn, could be cut down safely.

The closure between the Treluswell roundabout at Penryn and the roundabout at Devoran was expected to last for hours.

"We've had to close the A39 between Treluswell and Devoran roundabout on an emergency basis to facilitate safe felling of an unstable mature tree.

"It's anticipated the road will remain closed for the next 4-5 hours to allow the tree to be felled & subsequent removal/tidying work.

"We have hard closures in place at Treluswell and Devoran Gate as well as either side of the work site near The Norway Inn".

They added: "Please avoid the area if at all possible as the emergency closure will likely result in significant disruption to the surrounding minor road network".

However, they reopened the stretch shortly after 2pm, thanking people for their patience.

The diversion route was via the A393, A30 and A390 and vice versa. It caused long delays during the middle of the day. But teams were able to reopen it in time for the evening rush hour.
