Treliske issues norovirus warning after outbreaks

Published by Emma Carton at 7:39am 31st October 2019. (Updated at 3:40pm 31st October 2019)

Cornwall's main hospital has tweeted several warnings about norovirus, after several outbreaks.

It comes after around 30 children and eight adults fell ill at a holiday park in Cornwall.

Mullion Holiday Park had to carry out a deep-clean, after the sickness bug spread.

Now Treliske has issued an appeal, warning norovirus is doing the rounds in the Duchy.

Visitors showing any signs and symptoms are being urged to stay well away from the wards.

NHS Kernow says using a lot of soap and water to wash your hands is the only way to stop it - even if you had it last year.

"I'm so sorry to those people but you can catch it again.

"There are lots and lots of different types of noroviruses and so that means, for most of us, we don't have any lasting immunity and you can quite easily catch it again within a couple of months.

"We release many millions of particles of the virus but only twenty are needed to cause an infection.

"So it's really easy to catch, it's really easy to contaminate an environment and that makes it really easy to spread".

Head of Infection Control, Lisa Johnson

What can I do to stop norovirus spreading?

The NHS says the following simple precautions can reduce the spread of Norovirus:

  • Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration
  • Have plenty of rest
  • Thorough hand washing to prevent others becoming infected. Always clean your hands with soap and hot water when entering and leaving a hospital, nursing home or anywhere else where there are vulnerable people
  • Do not handle or prepare food for other people for a minimum of 48 hours until symptom free
  • Avoid contact with anyone suffering from the virus for two to three days after they are completely free of symptoms
  • Medical advice should be sought if symptoms continue beyond 48 hours
  • Call the NHS 111 helpline if symptoms do not quickly subside or you have additional concerns; visit NHS Choices website nhs.uk/conditions/norovirus or your pharmacist.
