Torrential rain warning extended across Cornwall

Torrential rain warning extended across Cornwall

Published by Emma Carton at 10:58am 1st November 2019. (Updated at 12:30pm 1st November 2019)

The Met Office weather warning for torrential rain has been extended to cover more parts of Cornwall.

Forecasters say the downpours will hit areas north and east of Newquay and Padstow.

Up to 80mm of rain could fall across the moors, sparking the risk of flash flooding.

The yellow weather alert will be in force from 6am until 11.59pm, alongside that warning for gales of up to 80mph.

What can we expect?

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life
  • Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads
  • There is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses

What is the forecast?

"The warning area has been brought southwards into more of south-west England, whilst north Wales and northern England has been removed.

"A spell of heavy rain is expected to develop across western parts of England and Wales, becoming slow-moving in some areas.

"There remains uncertainty in where the rain becomes prolonged but some locations are likely to see 30-40mm during the day with isolated totals of 60-80mm possible over higher ground of Dartmoor, Exmoor and south Wales.

"Rain is expected to ease through the course of Saturday night".
