Fire breaks out at a care home in Newquay

A care home in Newquay has been forced to evacuate after a fire.

There were fears vulnerable residents could become trapped, putting lives at risk.

Crews from the town and Perranporth were scrambled on Sunday afternoon, along with police and paramedics.

However officials say the blaze was confined to a cooker and everyone made it out safely.

"At 16:17 Critical Control received a 999 call reporting a fire at a residential care home.

"Staff were in the process of evacuating residents from the building but, due to the use of the premises and the vulnerability of the occupants inside, critical control graded the incident as 'persons reported' due to the potential risk to life.

"Two appliances from Newquay Community Fire Station and one appliance from Perranporth Community Fire Station were immediately mobilised, along with a wholetime station manager.

"A group manager also monitored the incident from control.

"The police and ambulance service were also called to the incident.

"On arrival, crews found that a small fire had occurred in a cooker, which was out on arrival.

"Crews conducted an inspection of the property.

"The cause of the fire was accidental and confined to the cooker".
