Flats evacuated as fire breaks out in St Austell

Published by Emma Carton at 7:27am 4th November 2019. (Updated at 12:55pm 4th November 2019)

Residents have been forced to evacuate after a fire broke out at Cornwall's only high-rise block of flats.

Crews from St Austell, St Dennis, Mevagissey and Truro were scrambled to Park House Flats in St Austell.

They called in back-up from Lostwithiel and Launceston in the early hours of Sunday, after reports of an alarm going off.

Officials have since confirmed that they believe the blaze on Bridge Road was caused by a faulty electrical socket.

"At 0200hrs the Critical Control Centre received a 999 call reporting the fire alarm system at Park House Flats was sounding.

"Immediately, crews from St Austell, St Dennis, Mevagissey and Truro were mobilised.

"On arrival, crews investigated the alarm and found a small fire in one of the flats, which seemed to be involving the electrics within the flat.

"An additional appliance from Lostwithiel and Incident Command Unit from Launceston was mobilised.

"Crews, using breathing apparatus, swiftly extinguished the fire and confirmed all persons had been accounted for when evacuating.

"An initial fire investigation has taken place and the cause has been identified as a faulty electrical socket.

"The incident has been handed over to the owners of the property".
