Tragic death of a young student in Cornwall

Police are investigating the tragic death of a young student in Cornwall.

Officers were called to Penryn last week, to concerns for the welfare of a child.

When they arrived at the property on Thursday, a youngster was pronounced dead.

Devon and Cornwall Police are treating the incident as unexplained, but not suspicious.

They have described what happened as desperately sad, adding their thoughts are with the child's friends and family.

"Police were called at 8am today to a property in Helland Gardens, Penryn following reports of concern for the welfare for a child within the property.

"Emergency services attended the scene and the child was sadly declared deceased.

"The death is currently being treated as unexplained but is not thought to be suspicious. 

"This is a desperately sad and tragic incident for everyone involved and our thoughts are with the child's family and friends at this difficult time. 

"Police enquiries remain ongoing at this time".

It has been confirmed that the youngster was a student at Penryn College, where staff are “deeply shocked and saddened”.

“On the morning of Thursday 31 October, we learned of the sudden death of one of our students.

"We are deeply shocked and saddened by this news.

"The individual was a valued member of our school community and will be greatly missed by staff and peers alike.

"Our thoughts are with the individual’s family and friends during this difficult time”.
