Cornish families stuck on waiting lists for social housing

A charity claims thousands of people in Cornwall and the south-west are on stuck on waiting lists for social housing.

Figures from Shelter show more than 9 in 10 private renters in the region who need a social home cannot get one.

The charity claims it is down to failure to build new social homes, meaning people are being trapped in expensive private renting.

Last year, 6,434 social rent homes were built in England but 21,500 were lost through sales, conversions and demolitions.

A YouGov study shows 24% of private renters in the south-west are falling behind on their rent, which works out to over 200,000 people!

It means people are going to extreme lengths to pay the rent, including:

  • 21% cutting back on food (equivalent to more than 180,000 people)
  • 10% skipping meals completely (equivalent to nearly 90,000 people)
  • 22% cutting back on heating their home (equivalent to almost 190,000 people)

Shelter wants a commitment to deliver at least 90,000 social homes a year to ensure everyone has a stable, affordable place to live.

“When 9 in 10 private renters who need a social home in the south west aren’t getting one, alarm bells should be ringing.

But when this means people are forced to skip meals just to pay their rent then clearly, we need to take action now.

“Decades of failure to build social housing has created a nightmare scenario with people trapped in private renting all over the country.

"On top of living on the breadline, far too many are facing the threat of eviction or battling poor conditions".

Polly Neate, Shelter
