Flood alerts issued in Cornwall as heavy rain hits

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 5:06pm 6th November 2019. (Updated at 6:48am 7th November 2019)

Flood alerts have been issued for parts of Cornwall ahead of an evening of heavy showers.

The first is for the West Cornwall Rivers, for areas around Land's End, Penzance, Helston, Crowlas, St Ives, Hayle, Camborne, Portreath and Perranporth.

The second is for the Upper River Tamar, affecting areas around Bude, Helenbridge, Bridgerule, Canworthy Water, Launceston and Yeolmbridge.

There were several reports of flash flooding on the roads on Wednesday evening, particularly around Helston and the Lizard.

What can we expect?

Both flood alerts have been issued following the recent wet weather, which has resulted in high river levels.

With more rain on the way, the Environment Agency may lead to flooding of low-lying land.

"A band of frontal rain is forecast to cross Cornwall on the evening of Wednesday 6th November, followed by frequent and heavy showers.

"Due to recent wet weather river levels remain high and are likely to respond rapidly to the forecast rainfall.

"This may lead to flooding of low lying land during Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

"Please take care near the areas of concern and monitor your local weather conditions.

"We will continue to monitor the situation".
