Fresh flood risk as more torrential rain hits Cornwall

Another band of torrential rain is putting Cornwall back on flood watch.

Alerts have has been issued for the Upper River Tamar and West Cornwall Rivers.

Drivers are being urged to take extra care, after reports of flooding on the roads.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for downpours and whilst that does not cover the Duchy, we are being warned to expect heavy and sometimes wintry showers.

What flood alerts are in force?

The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the Upper River Tamar in north Cornwall and the West Cornwall Rivers.

"Flooding is possible on Saturday afternoon and evening. Over the last 6 hours we have seen heavy rainfall and the River Hayle is now rising.

"Further heavy showers are forecast through Saturday evening, expected levels suggest that there will be flooding to low lying land and roads close to rivers from late Saturday afternoon.

"We expect the rivers to remain high throughout Saturday evening and into Sunday, though no flooding to properties is currently forecast.

"Take care near the areas of concern and monitor your local weather conditions.

"We are monitoring river levels and have staff in the area checking for and clearing blockages".

What is the full forecast?

Saturday: "Saturday will start frosty in the east. Heavy rain initially over Cornwall will edge across the region, with showers following. These could potentially turn thundery with a risk of hail. Coastal gales likely. Maximum temperature 10 °C.

Saturday night: "Further showers or occasional rain overnight and staying windy, particularly in the west. As such, it will not be as cold as previous nights. Minimum temperature 2 °C.

Sunday: "Generally rather cloudy with some showers in the south at first but becoming mostly dry with sunny spells later. The wind should ease throughout. Maximum temperature 10 °C.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday: "Persistent rain and stronger winds are expected to return on Monday. Showers and sunny spells on Tuesday and Wednesday. Cold with coastal gales likely throughout".
