Fisherman winched to hospital from the sea

A fisherman has been winched to safety from the sea off the north coast of Cornwall.

Coastguard crews, the RNLI and the rescue helicopter were all called to the Bedruthan Steps area on Sunday afternoon.

It was amid concerns for a person in the water in the Park Head area.

Pirate FM understands that the man was seen falling or being swept into the sea by passers-by who called 999.

The angler was airlifted to Treliske Hospital and further searches were carried out in the area.

"Our RNLI crew on the faster Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat arrived on scene at Porth Mear Cove, west of Porthcothan as the crew of the coastguard search and rescue helicopter were winching the angler from the sea.

"The casualty was flown to hospital in Truro while both lifeboat crews searched in light north easterly winds, slight sea and two-to-three-metre swell for anyone else in difficulties.

"After searching the area alongside coastguard volunteers from Newquay and Padstow, nobody else was found requiring help and the lifeboat crew returned to the harbour after 4pm.

"We understand the man was seen falling/being swept into the sea by passers-by who called the coastguard on 999 and threw the casualty a life ring, before he was rescued by the coastguard helicopter crew after spending around 20 minutes in the sea."
