Scarlett-Kate's Story

Scarlett-Kate was diagnosed with scoliosis at age seven but her story goes back much further.

The youngster from St Austell has cerebral palsy as, due to a very long and stressful labour, she was born not breathing.

Scarlett-Kate was resuscitated for around 10 minutes which starved her brain of oxygen.

Luckily the brain damage is minimal but, since then, she has faced many battles - including scoliosis.

At the time, mum Chloe Sullivan told Pirate FM they were raising money for a special Gensingen brace.

"When I saw her x-ray I could not believe it! Her spine is shaped like an S.

"We went to see the scoliosis team on the NHS. We were told she will need to wear a back brace for between 14 and 23 hours a day, until the point she is old enough for an operation.

"I have been looking for a specialist for advice as this such a big thing to go through.

"That's when I found out about the Gensingen brace. The money will be spent on getting specialist brace".

Chloe added: "This little girl is absolutely incredible and her strength is so inspiring.

"She stays positive despite the sleepless nights and back pain every day alongside the symptoms of CP and muscle spasms.

"The way she smiles and just gets on with life in her little carefree Scarlett way inspires me to keep going, no matter how down and powerless I feel sometimes."

The Crowdfunder campaign to fund Scarlett-Kate's first brace raised over £4,000 in just 10 days.

Her spine was in the shape of an S before it was fitted but since wearing the first brace, things have really improved!

Scarlett-Kate needs to grow whilst wearing her back brace to help balance her spine and straighten it out.

After several appointments, doctors have told the eight-year-old's family she will need a new brace by February.

Mum Chloe is desperate to get that sorted, so her daughter does not have any time without wearing the brace.

"The difference in her posture is incredible. It's helped her to stand straight and everyone tells me how much more capable she is, how independent she is and how much she's grown.

"It's improved her quality of life so much.

"She's sleeping better, walking better and just being able to do small things that we all take for granted so much easier - just from having her posture changed".

Scarlett-Kate also has an appointment at DM Orthotics in Redruth, to try to get a special scoliosis suit that she can wear when she is not in her brace.

For now, the youngster is fighting hard and mum Chloe says her courage is a true inspiration.
