Hail, sleet and even snow showers reported in Cornwall

Published by Emma Carton at 8:00am 14th November 2019. (Updated at 9:08am 16th November 2019)

A warning is going out to drivers, amid reports of heavy hail, sleet and even snow showers in Cornwall.

Kernow Weather Team has tweeted an alert on Thursday morning, after recent flurries.

The white stuff settled across Dartmoor on Wednesday afternoon and into the evening.

The gritters had to be drafted in last night, after slippery conditions were reported on the A30 at Okehampton.

Will the Westcountry see more snow settle?

The Met Office has issued several weather warnings for the white stuff and rain.

At the moment, they only come as close as the Devon/Somerset border: Read more.

However forecasters are not ruling out more flurries, with temperatures remaining in single figures.

"For the next few days it's going to stay pretty cold and pretty windy. We're also going to see more of those outbreaks of rain as well.

"There are a lot of isobars on the charts as well so it's going to stay windy.

"Those winds are coming in from the north so a lot of cold air wrapped up across the UK so yes, it's going to still feel cold.

"Another cold day - probably the coldest day of the week. There's a lot of cloud around and some further outbreaks of rain lasting well into the afternoon.

"There's still some strong winds from the north too.

"Across the Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, we could see temperatures reaching almost into double figures but it is going to feel cold wherever you are".

What is the full forecast?

Thursday: "Northern parts of the region will experience a wet, cold and windy morning, but some temporary brightness for southern coastal regions is likely. A wet afternoon rain will turn lighter. Maximum temperature 7 °C".

Thursday night: "The rain will gradually disperse throughout the night, but most will stay overcast with the odd drop of rain. The cloud and strong winds should prevent a widespread frost forming. Minimum temperature 1 °C".

Friday: "Another overcast and cold day for most, but there could be some brighter periods in the morning for coastal parts of Cornwall. Breezy elsewhere, with some light showers at times. Maximum temperature 8 °C".

Outlook for Saturday to Monday: "Saturday will be another cold and breezy day, with scattered showers, but sunny spells in the west. A chance of brighter, but still cold weather on Sunday and Monday".
