Dawlish tops list of areas most at risk from climate change

New research is revealing the UK hotspots most at risk from climate change, including two in the south-west.

Dawlish has topped a list of places that could suffer the biggest impact by 2040.

That is because of extreme storms, like the one that left the train line dangling over the sea.

Other at-risk areas include Weston-Super-Mare, because of rising sea levels.

Here is the full list of areas most at risk from stuff like storms, flooding and heatwaves.

Climate Change Risk List

The research, from a green coalition including Friends of the Earth and Extinction Rebellion, has been put together for the Daily Mirror's The Climate Issue.

Dr Emily Grossman co-founded the group Scientist for Extinction Rebellion and says the warning is clear.

"As a result of climate change, the atmosphere is getting warmer. What this means is that more water evaporates from the oceans, we get heavier rainfall and we also get more extreme weather events because this interferes with our weather systems.

"What this means here in the UK is that areas of the UK that have been affected in the past by the storms, by flooding, by heatwaves - this is going to get worse.

"These events are made more likely because of climate change and that means they're going to happen more frequently.

"So what we're looking at, going towards 2050, there are large parts of the UK that will be flooded on a yearly basis, whereas previously that might have only happened once a century".
