Police warn about debit card scam in north Cornwall

Police warn fraudsters are targeting shops across north Cornwall, to steal alcohol and cigarettes.

Officers in Wadebridge have had a string of reports about a debit card scam, from St Merryn to Newquay.

They say it involves several men who are not fully inserting their cards into machines, so it can run as 'customer not present'.

They are then entering different card details that go through, before the transaction later bounces.

Business that spot anything dodgy are being urged to contact Action Fraud or the police.

"Scam alert for business that sell alcohol and cigarettes!!!

"Wadebridge Police have had several reports of suspicious males buying large quantities of alcohol and cigarettes from off licences and shops in the St Merryn area, including other areas along the north coast - Newquay and further afield.

"Please be aware this is a scam we are calling the #customernotpresent scam.

"This is a fraudulent use of a 'false' debit card, whereby the 'offender' does not fully insert the card into the machine.

"The machine does not realise the card is there, therefore a transaction can be made with #customernotpresent.

"The 'offender' then enters different card details from the card they have put into the card machine.

"By doing so, the payment will go through on the card machine but at a later stage the payment will not be successful.

"Please report any such incidents to Action Fraud via thier website or tel 03001232040 and police via calling 101 or emailing 101@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk".
