Pedestrian seriously injured after incident on A38 bridge

A pedestrian has been rushed to hospital after a serious incident on the A38 in Devon.

Police say the man went over the railings and down a bank, before landing near the carriageway near Plympton.

They have confirmed the casualty was caught in a collision with a car in Merafield Road on Friday morning.

Officers say he suffered serious head and leg injuries and a driver has also been taken to Derriford.

The A38 between Marsh Mills and Deep Lane was shut to allow the air ambulance to land, but has since reopened.

"Emergency services were called at 10.15am today (15th November) after a car was in collision with a man in Merafield Road.

"The pedestrian went over the over-bridge railings, down a bank towards the A38. 

"It is believed he ended up at the bottom of the bank near the carriageway.

"The man has been taken to Derriford Hospital by land ambulance with serious injuries. 

"The male driver of the car has also been taken to hospital - any injuries unknown at this time

"The A38 was closed in both directions for a short time for the air ambulance to land.

"The A38 is now open Cornwall-bound.

"One lane northbound remains closed".
