Truro City of Lights confirms it WILL go ahead

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 12:26pm 20th November 2019. (Updated at 12:45pm 20th November 2019)

Truro City of Lights has confirmed that the parade will still go ahead... despite the bad weather.

A weather warning for heavy rain was in force for parts of Cornwall on Wednesday morning.

That has now been stood down by the Met Office but it is still forecast to to windy with a few showers.

Bosses of the famous Christmas event held a meeting and have decided to go ahead, saying the daytime wind and raise should be easing by 6pm.

"City of Lights Lantern Parade will be going ahead this evening, starting at 7pm. We are monitoring the forecast and taking  precautions where necessary.

"We look forward to enjoying the evening with you and please don’t forget to donate your £2 at our donation points or look out for a volunteer with a bucket.”

Street entertainment kicks off at 6.30pm on Wednesday evening and the parade starts at 7pm.

The lantern parade is celebrating its 23rd year with the theme 'Under the Clock' - inspired by the transformation that's happening at the Hall for Cornwall.

Over 1,000 people will be taking part in the procession, including school children, musicians and dancers.

30,000 people are expected to descend on Truro to watch.

An appeal has gone out to safeguard the City of Lights lantern parade, which is one of the biggest Christmas events in Cornwall.

The parade relies on donations to keep it going.

While the event has a range of sponsors, it still needs help with raising money to help with the funding.

It costs £50,000 to put the parade on and bosses say most of that is spent making sure the event is safe for spectators:

"The City of Lights parade began as a gentle procession through the streets of Truro to celebrate the time the artists took to create their lanterns.

"Over 20 years the parade grew... with organised street closures, community and school workshops... and a firm place in the hearts of Cornwall’s only city.

"Now, Truro swells with more than 30,000 visitors who attend the parade and welcome winter in celebration. Our streets are bustling and if you’ve never been before, there really is no other night quite like it.

"So many businesses and individuals help us every year, please let us know if you can pledge a small amount to help us reach our target."

"We're exploring all of those fantastic beautiful stories that have happened in the city hall and in the old Hall for Cornwall building and looking at all of those wonderful things that may have happened and been witnessed  by our town clock.

"I don't want to give the game away but there are going to be some lovely tales being told and some familiar stories that people will pick up on as they see the lanterns."

"As you can imagine, trying to look after and protect 30 thousand people is no small task. If everyone donates £2, that would secure the event every single year.

"Whether they would like to donate two pounds or if they would like to offer a few hours of their time to fundraise or if a business would like to sell a special 'City of Lights' hot chocolate on the night, and donate some of those proceeds we would be so appreciative."
