The RNLI issues high surf warning for Cornwall

Published by Emma Carton at 8:15am 20th November 2019. (Updated at 8:19am 20th November 2019)

The RNLI has issued a high surf warning for Cornwall, predicting huge waves.

It says monster swells are on the cards along the Duchy's coast.

Beach-goers are being urged to take extra care, with no lifeguards in service.

The charity is urging anyone who spots someone in trouble to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

What should I do if someone is in trouble?

  • Maintain visual contact with the casualty(s).
  • Stay on scene to advise rescuers as they arrive.
  • Never attempt a rescue by entering the water yourself.
  • Use public rescue equipment if it is available and it is safe to do so.

RNLI Area Lifesaving Manager, Dickon Berriman says rip currents could pose a risk, even for experienced surfers.

'We recommend people do not go swimming, and experienced surfers should avoid exposed beaches and only consider surfing at sheltered spots with appropriate supervision.

"The swell will be incredibly powerful so anglers, coastal walkers and those taking photographs are reminded to keep a safe distance from the water.

"If you see someone in difficulty call 999 and ask for the Coastguard".
