Flooding on the roads as yet more rain hits Cornwall

Published by Emma Carton at 7:20am 21st November 2019. (Updated at 8:46am 21st November 2019)

Cornwall is braced for yet another band of torrential rain.

Kernow Weather Team has issued an alert for flash downpours.

The group says there is the risk of flooding on the roads throughout Thursday.

The team has already received reports of standing water between Penzance and St Just.

"We have just had a report of flooding on the Penzance side of Tremethick Cross on the St Just road.

"Please take extra care in the area".

What is the alert?

"Once again parts of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly will see pulses of heavy showers which could turn prolonged at times.

"This could cause some travel disruption in the morning, due to standing water.

"Why are we getting so much unsettled weather?

"This is because the jetstream is very powerful as well as sitting low down beneath the UK, and will continue to bring low weather systems in off the Atlantic, well into next week.

"So, I am afraid to say, we have more wet and windy conditions yet to come!"

What is the forecast?

Whilst the Met Office has not issued any official weather warnings for Cornwall, forecasters say we are in for a wet couple of days.

Thursday: "After a dry start for some, rain across Cornwall will spread eastwards through the day. This will clear to heavy showers across western areas through the afternoon. Breezy. Mildest in the west but rather cold further east. Maximum temperature 11 °C"

Thursday night: "Persistent rain will clear eastwards, with showers following across the region. Some of these could be heavy and thundery. Chilly for most, with a patchy ground frost. Minimum temperature 2 °C"

Friday: "Showers will continue during the morning, turning to heavy and persistent rain throughout the afternoon. This wet weather will persist into evening. Chilly, away from the far west. Maximum temperature 11 °C"

Outlook for Saturday to Monday: "Wet and breezy on Saturday. Drier and brighter at first on Sunday before more rain spreads eastwards. Sunshine and showers by Monday. Turning slightly milder".
