Flood alerts for Cornwall as heavy rain sweeps through

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 5:59pm 21st November 2019.

Two flood alerts have gone out for Cornwall as heavy rain sweeps across the county.

Persistent rain has led to river levels rising - with the risk of flooding.

The Environment Agency has issued two alerts for the west Cornwall rivers and also the River Lyhner.

It means flooding is possible for Lands End, Penzance, Helston, Crowlas, St Ives, Hayle, Camborne, Portreath and Perranporth.

The Rame Peninsula, Callington, Saltash, Rilla Mill, Pillaton and Landrake are also at risk.

People in affected areas of low lying land are being told to be prepared.

"Frontal rain with heavy bursts at times is continuing to push up from the south this afternoon and evening, Thursday 21st November.

"The rain is concentrated over the south coast and inland upland areas.

"The persistent rain should clear by Thursday evening, but will be followed by frequent showers with further heavy downpours at times over the same area.

"River levels have risen gradually to this rainfall and are likely to continue to respond into tomorrow, Friday.

"Do not walk or drive through flood water. Avoid low lying roads and footpaths, which may be flooded.

"We are monitoring river levels and will update this message on Friday morning or when the situation changes."
