Four-day severe weather warning for Cornwall

Four-day severe weather warning for Cornwall

Published by Emma Carton at 11:36am 23rd November 2019.

Another batch of severe weather warnings have been issued for Cornwall, lasting for another four days.

The Met Office says bands of torrential rain are set to sweep the  Duchy until Wednesday, along with strong winds.

There is the risk of flooding, standing water on the roads and travel disruption.

It comes as police and firefighters issue a warning to drivers, as the latest downpours turn Cornwall's roads into rivers.

What weather warnings are in force?

The existing weather warning for torrential rain covers the whole of Cornwall until 6pm on Saturday.

A second has been issued from Land's End to Launceston between 4pm on Sunday until 10am on Monday.

The final rain warning will be in force for the whole of the Duchy between 12pm on Tuesday and 3pm on Wednesday.

What can we expect?

  • Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely
  • Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer
  • Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer

What is the forecast?

"A band of rain will arrive in the far south-west of England later on Sunday afternoon, moving north-east into the evening, bringing 10-15mm of rain widely and possibly 25mm over high ground.

"This will be followed by heavy showers overnight and at first on Monday morning, which could produce 10-15mm of rain in less than 2 hours in places.

"A broad area of persistent heavy rain is expected to move north-east across this region between mid-Tuesday and early Wednesday, and may be accompanied by gale force winds across the south-west of England for a time.

"Heavy showers will likely follow in the wake of this rain during Wednesday, with these probably being heaviest and most numerous close to the Bristol and English Channel coastlines.

"Through the combination of both the rain and following showers 10-20mm of rainfall is expected widely across southern England and parts of southern Wales, with the potential for 40-60mm in some isolated locations, especially across the high ground and locations that see the greatest number of showers".
