Flood risk as Cornwall braces for more downpours

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 9:17am 24th November 2019. (Updated at 6:00pm 24th November 2019)

Cornwall is warned that 10-15mm of rain could fall within just two hours - as four days' worth of weather warnings go out.

Torrential downpours are set to sweep the Duchy from 4pm on Sunday afternoon.

The Met Office yellow alert is in place until 10am on Monday morning and then is followed by another, from Tuesday lunchtime to Wednesday afternoon.

Forecasters say there could be a risk of flooding because of the persistent heavy rain.

There are currently three flood alerts in place for Cornwall, for the River Lynher, Upper River Tamar and the West Cornwall Rivers.

What to expect:

  • Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely
  • Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer
  • Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer

"A band of rain will arrive in the far south-west of England later on Sunday afternoon, moving north-east into the evening, bringing 10-15 mm of rain widely and possibly 25 mm over high ground.

"This will be followed by heavy showers overnight and at first on Monday morning, which could produce 10-15 mm of rain in less than 2 hours in places."
