50mph gales to batter Cornwall's coast

Cornwall's coast gets set to be battered by 50mph gales across the weekend.

Weather forecasters say heavy rain and strong, gale-force winds will sweep across the Duchy on Saturday and Sunday.

Both UK Southwest Storm Chasers Ltd and Kernow Weather Team are warning there could be travel disruption and that drivers should take care on the roads.

After the wet and windy weather temperatures are also set to drop, with some parts of Cornwall seeing lows of -3 by Monday morning.

"East North-east winds are expected to increase from Saturday morning especially for exposed coastal areas and high ground.

"Gusts of 30mph to 40mph expected inland across the South West and 40mph to 55mph on exposed coasts and hills possibly higher in one or two places.

"Winds will start to ease for more western areas during the early evening with Dorset and Hampshire seeing winds ease from late evening early Sunday morning.

"There is also a little uncertainty to exactly how much rain we will see during Saturday with southern coastal areas seeing the heaviest of any rain before becoming lighter as we move into the evening.

"With the East North-east winds, it will make it feel cold and adding in the rain will just add to difficult conditions on our roads, especially for those heading out Christmas shopping during the day.

"This is not a weather warning just an advisory update to expect strong winds and rain during the day."

UK Southwest Storm Chasers Ltd

"KWT are issuing a weather advisory for strong wind and heavy rain for Saturday.

"A Low weather system will move very close to the South of Cornwall during Saturday, this will bring a spell of heavy showers which could turn prolonged thoughout the day, as well as strong gusts of wind (Southeasterly) 30-40mph inland and gusting up to 40-50mph around the Southern coast and exposed areas.

"There could be some travel disruptions tomorrow, please drive to the road conditions.

"Sunday the weather is looking alot brighter and drier with some sunny spells. Sunday night, the temperature's will start to drop quickly, with some areas of Cornwall seeing temperatures down to - 3 on Monday morning."
