Reports of 'youngster with knife' on St Austell clay trails

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 11:54am 2nd December 2019.

Police in St Austell have reacted to reports of youngsters 'with a knife' on the clay trails.

Officers say they are investigating after several posts were made on social media.

One incident has been confirmed, but officials say no verbal threats were made and the witness was not hurt.

Police are reminding people not to cause 'undue worry and concern' by posting rumours online, as it can affect their investigations.

But anyone who sees or is involved in an incident like this is being urged to report it to officers.

"Regarding the recent posts about people being threatened on the Clay Trails.

"We have had just one confirmed incident which we are currently investigating. This incident involved two juvenile males one of which is believed to have been holding a knife.

"Neither said anything at all so no threats were made verbally. The witness is uninjured and we are in contact with them.

"If you are witness to or involved in an incident please make contact with us at your first opportunity. 999 - Emergency and 101 - Non Emergency.

"We would like to remind you that while social media can be a useful tool in some cases it can cause undue worry and concern when rumours and untruths are circulated without confirmation from an official source.

"If an incident has occurred and is subject of speculation and discussion on social media this may prejudice any subsequent investigation and prosecution."
