200 people kept inside school amid 'knife incident'

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 12:25pm 5th December 2019. (Updated at 1:03pm 5th December 2019)

It has been revealed around 200 parents and children were kept inside a school amid a 'knife incident' in Penzance.

Police were called to reports of a man with a knife threatening somebody on Alverton Road.

Officers have confirmed that members of the public helped to detain him late on Wednesday afternoon.

It happened not far from Alverton Primary School, where an exhibition was taking place.

The headteacher has told Pirate FM how they advised people to stay indoors, but everyone remained calm.

"It happened a few hundred yards away from the school so it wasn't directly outside.

"We were notified by a parent coming in, we had an exhibition on for two hours from 4pm to 6pm with around 200 people in attendance.

"We advised parents and children to stay inside until it was safe to go out.

"Most people were unaware what was going on to be honest, then when we went outside to check the situation a man had been arrested.

"Everybody was really calm and dealt with it really well, nobody panicked."

Martin Higgs, Headteacher

A 39-year-old local man was arrested and currently remains in custody.

Officers are thanking the members of the public who helped and the scene and are reassuring local residents that there is no longer a threat.

"Police are currently investigating reports of a man with a knife threatening another man on Alverton Road in Penzance which happened yesterday, Wednesday 4th December.

"A 39-year-old man from Penzance was arrested and is currently in police custody."
