Bravery of passersby praised after 'knife incident'

Police are praising the courage of passersby during an alleged knife incident in Penzance.

Officers were called to reports of a man making threats on Alverton Road.

When they arrived on Wednesday evening, they found a suspect had been detained.

Around 200 parents and children were kept inside a nearby school till the incident was over.

"At 5pm on Wednesday the 4th December, a male was arrested following an incident in Alverton Road. 

"A male chased another with a knife before walking into traffic and brandishing it at a passing motorist. 

"Members of the public then challenged a male and detained him prior to police arrival and arrest.

"Officers would like to thank the members of the public for the their courage and swift actions in detaining the male. 

"No matter what happens there are good people in Penzance looking out for each other in our town".

A 39-year-old local man was arrested and, as of Thursday afternoon, remained in custody.

Devon and Cornwall Police have since confirmed the man has been released under investigation, pending further enquiries.
