A shed full of toys at a primary school in Penzance has been 'destroyed by fire'.

Pirate understands that the blaze broke out at around 7pm on Friday evening.

The shed, at Pensans School in Heamoor, was full of toys which had been collected for the children to play with at break times.

It has sparked outrage among locals as photos have been shared on social media.

"I had returned back to the school after taking children to a choir performance with my colleague.

"On returning we could smell the fire and were horrified to find out that our shed containing our outside play equipment was on fire."

People have been sharing their devastation online about what has happened.

Sally posted: "Omg can’t believe this I’m absolutely gutted someone has set fire to the toy shed at school all that stuff I’ve taken so long to collect make and get for the kids to play with at lunch and someone has done this I’m actually devastated I can’t believe that someone has done this why all those things were for the kids to enjoy and play with at lunchtime I’m so so gutted why would someone do this."

She later added: "Thank you to everyone for the offer of donations to the school please just be mindful on the items you are donating as they have to be kite-marked and be to a certain safety standard for the school to be able to have them on site , I will take the time to write a list of items and post it on here if you would like to donate to help that is absolutely amazing and we do really appreciate it all.

"I would just hate to turn anything away from you if is doesn’t meet the safety standard requirements hope you all understand my post for this and thank you so much to the amazing people in our community there are so many offers of help it’s very overwhelming for me and all the team at pensans xx."

One person told Pirate FM: "The blaze destroyed the shed and the toys that were inside of it. These toys are not only for the pleasure of the children but, for some, are a needed accessory for learning and development.

"It's been months hard work to get funding/fundraising/donation to get the shed full and we have set up a just give pay to help."

A Just Giving page has now been set up to try and raise £500 to help replace the toys that were inside.

You can find the donation page here.

"I have set this little fundraiser to help the school purchase some new toys for their pupils.

"I know that a lot of hard work and time went into the Toy Box and wont be something easily replaced.

"The donation will be given to the school to replace some of the items lost in the fire."
