Drivers are urged to take extra care amid reports of thunder, lightning and hail showers ahead of Storm Atiyah.

The Met Office and weather groups have issued alerts as that severe weather warning for strong winds kicks in.

The yellow warning will be in force until 9am on Monday, with the worst of the wild weather expected to hit on Sunday night.

Power cuts are already being reported in the Penzance, Polzeath and St Breward areas as the gusts become more powerful: Check the areas affected.

We are also being warned that the storm could spark huge waves on the coasts and travel disruption.

What is Cornwall experiencing?

In the last couple of hours, Kernow Weather Team has had reports of thunder, lightning and even flash hail showers.

At different points on Sunday, gusts of between 61mph and 73mph have been reported.

It all comes as Storm Atiyah approaches, with that yellow weather warning for gale force winds out until Monday morning.

What is the full forecast?

The Met Office severe weather warning is in force from 3pm on Sunday until 9am on Monday, bringing:

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely

  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
  • It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves

“Very strong westerly and then north-westerly winds are expected to affect parts of Wales, south-west and southern England during Sunday evening and again during the early hours of Monday, easing soon after dawn.

“Gusts of 50-60 mph are likely inland and 65-75 mph around some coasts.

“The very strong winds will be accompanied by heavy and often squally showers of rain and possibly hail.
