Teen helps bring Christmas to Cornish village

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 2:13pm 9th December 2019.

Meet the teenager who has helped bring Christmas to a Cornish village.

13-year-old Alfie Wills noticed that Barripper didn't have any festive lights, after visiting other towns' displays with his mum.

The schoolboy has since been on a mission to bring Christmas spirit to his home town near Camborne.

Alfie has spent around seven months fundraising for money so the village can have its own Christmas lights display.

All his hard worked paid off and Barripper now even has its own giant tree.

The lights were switched on last Friday evening with a lot of support from the local community.

Alfie told ITV News West Country how the idea came about:

"Well me and mum went to different villages for the switch-ons, and we thought why haven't we got lights, I asked mum and she said well you can get lights, so I raised up money and we went around doing it and got the money for it.

"I put a box at the pub, I did a bake sale over at the chapel and I went to the park and had a table with a box on it for the money."

Alfie's mum Anna told ITV News West Country she's very proud of what he's achieved.

"He's been doing this for seven months, and I thought is he going to stick at it, he thought of lots of ideas and was out with the villagers, people came up with weird and wacky ideas to raise the money, and he stuck at it,  and he was out on his bike putting posters up.

"So I'm really proud, he's quite a quiet character so for him to do this and it's brought everyone together. The village has never seen so many lights so I am extremely proud!"
