Three-day risk of gales and heavy rain for Cornwall

Published by Emma Carton at 7:17am 12th December 2019. (Updated at 8:41am 12th December 2019)

Forecasters say there is now a three-day risk of gales and torrential rain across Cornwall.

Kernow Weather Team has extended its warning till Saturday.

It is predicting gusts of up to 70mph an hour on the coasts.

The group says there is a chance of hail and thunder too.

The Met Office has not issued an official alert or named Storm Brendan, but it says it is keeping an eye.

What is the warning from Kernow Weather Team?

"KWT are issuing a weather warning for strong winds and heavy rain for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

"There is a lot of media talk about storm Brendan. I would personally like to confirm that up until now, there are no official reports naming Storm Brendan by the met office or met Eireann.

"Thursday there will see this new low pressure sliding in from the Atlantic, this will be bringing us more gales and hefty showers, moving in from the south-west until it veers to a Westerly direction in the afternoon.

"This will be when the wind will increase considerably. The current weather charts are indicating speeds of 30-50mph inland and 50-70+mph around the coast and exposed areas. (Gales to severe gales are very likely)

"One thing to keep a close eye on is the risk of hail and a chance of a rumble of thunder.

"Into Friday, the winds will remain very strong gusting up to 65+mph with very heavy downpours of rain.

"The wind will remain on a westerly direction, changing to a Southwesterly as the day goes on.

"There is some uncertainty about Saturday, as once again the isobars remain in a tight formation.

"At the moment we could see even more gales and heavy rain in the afternoon but we will bring you this information later this week".
