70mph gales hit election counts in Cornwall

70mph gales hit election counts in Cornwall

Published by Emma Carton at 9:16am 13th December 2019. (Updated at 9:18am 13th December 2019)

Gusts of 70mph have been recorded, as stormy weather hits Cornwall's election counts.

Kernow Weather Team had already issued a warning for strong winds heavy rain and wintry showers!

The group says there is more to come throughout Friday and into Saturday as well.

It comes as the bad weather affected voter ballots being transferred on the Isles of Scilly.

The St Ives count has had to be suspended - and is not expected to happen until around 2.30pm.

What is the warning from Kernow Weather Team?

Kernow Weather Team issued the following three-day warning for gales, downpours and hail and even the slight risk of snow!

"The wind speeds will start to increase to between 30-50mph inland and possibly 50-70mph around the coast and open areas.

"Accompanied by a torrent of showers which could turn prolonged at times (gales are possible) into Friday.

"The strong winds will remain with us for most of the day with us seeing 30-40mph inland and 40-65+mph in any exposed areas, the rain being heaviest in the morning (please take extra care whilst out driving, as there could be some standing water or flooding on some roads).

"Then you'll be pleased to know we get a small break before the next weather system moves in again on Friday lunchtime. Yet again this will bring us more rain and strong winds. This next weather system will stay with us until Saturday afternoon.

"We are seeing some uncertainty for Sunday, as there is one more weather system moving in from the south-west/west, so when this rain bumps into the cooler air we could start to see wintry showers (hail, sleet and yes a risk of snow).

"These could fall anywhere over Cornwall, more so over higher grounds".
