Promises a new hospital will be built for Cornwall

It is being promised that there will be a new hospital for Cornwall - and it could be built off the A30 in the middle of the Duchy.

St Austell and Newquay's MP says that the NHS is a key priority, as he is re-elected.

Pirate FM told you how up to £450 million could be spent on a new hospital unit for Cornwall, thanks to a big government cash pot.

That could include another acute centre on a new site in the Duchy and upgrades to community hospitals.

It followed plans to boost services at Treliske that were first announced earlier this year.

Now Steve Double says the new unit will happen, but he would like to see it built away from Treliske.

"It would be great to see another hospital built, I'd like to see it on the A30 in the middle of Cornwall where it would be more accessible and take some of the pressure off Treliske.

"Anywhere that is easily accesible in the middle of cornwall, we all know that Truro and where the hospital is getting more and more congested and harder to get to by vehicle.

"I think it would be great to take some of the pressure off that area and put it where it is much more easily accessible on the main trunk road.

"We're investing in our economy, and there are some very exciting opportunities in St Austell and Newquay with the spaceport, with geothermal energy, with lithium extraction.

"These things, we are on the cusp of seeing happen which I believe will be a real boost to our local economy."

Steve Double, MP for St Austell and Newquay

What could the £450m cash be spent on?

The plans for up to £450m for a new hospital in Cornwall were announced by the Health Secretary in September.

It is part of a new strategic Health Investment Programme of £13 billion to upgrade hospitals across the country.

This will include funds for the NHS in Cornwall to begin work, with local decision makers, to consider options.

They would include a brand new acute hospital on a new site, upgrading of existing community hospitals as well as redevelopment of existing facilities at the Royal Cornwall Hospital.

The case for a new Cornish hospital was presented to the Health Secretary at a meeting with all six of Cornwall's MPs earlier this year.

MPs say the fact that the government has accepted this and committed to fund a new hospital so soon is "great news for all in the Duchy".
