Gales and torrential rain have brought down electrical cables in St Ives.

They are arcing across Alexandra Road and the road has been cordoned off.

Firefighters are on the scene and an engineer is also on the way.

It comes as FIVE days of severe weather warnings are currently in force for Cornwall, with torrential rain and strong winds sweeping across the Duchy.

"One major pumping appliance and a light 4x4 vehicle are currently in attendance at Alexandra Road in St Ives following multiple reports of electrical cables arcing.

"The crew have cordoned off the area and are awaiting the arrival of a Western Power Distribution engineer.

"The road between Ayr Terrace and Alexandra Terrace is currently closed for public safety."

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service

A yellow weather warning is currently in force for gales of up to 70mph and lasts through until 3am on Thursday.

There is also a warning out for heavy rain which has been extended to last through until midday on Friday.

Now the Met Office has issued a third alert with more downpours forecast for the whole weekend, from midnight on Saturday through until 11.59pm on Sunday night.

We are being warned that the weather could spark flash flooding, power problems, big waves and treacherous driving conditions.
