85mph gusts as Cornwall's lashed by severe weather

Published by Emma Carton at 7:43am 19th December 2019. (Updated at 12:33pm 19th December 2019)

85mph an hour gusts have been recorded on the first of five days of severe weather for Cornwall.

The Met Office warning for gales has lifted, but forecasters are still expecting strong winds and alerts for torrential rain will last most of the weekend.

The Environment Agency has issued a string of flood alerts for rivers from Penzance to Bude and Saltash.

Drivers are being urged to watch out for surface water flooding on the roads on Thursday morning.

The wet weather caused travel disruption across Wednesday evening, with reports of six inches of water near Roche.

The A3083 at Cury Cross Lanes on the Lizard remains closed in both directions because of a fallen tree.

What weather warnings are in force?

The Met Office weather warning for gales has lifted, but forecasters are still predicting strong winds.

The first yellow weather warning for torrential rain will be in force until 12pm on Friday.

The second, also for heavy downpours, will be in force from 00.00am on Saturday until 12pm on Sunday.

We are being warned to expect possible flooding to homes and businesses, as well as on the roads.

Further travel disruption and power cuts are also on the cards across the whole of the Duchy and Devon as well.

"Several periods of heavy rain are likely from Wednesday afternoon until early Friday.

"30 to 50mm of rain is likely to accumulate quite widely during this time, with 60 to 90mm over some south-facing hills of south-west England and south Wales.

"Some drier periods are likely in between the spells of rain and the longevity of these is uncertain, but the overall accumulation of rain on saturated ground is likely to lead to flooding in places

"Further spells of heavy rain and showers are possible during Saturday.

"Whilst amounts of rain are not expected to be particularly large, 10-15mm and perhaps up to 30mm in places, falling onto highly saturated ground makes flooding more probable".

What flood alerts are in force?

An 'immediate action' flood warning has been issued for Hayle, as the rain turns roads to rivers.

The Environment Agency has issued a string of flood alerts for rivers from Penzance to Bude and Saltash.

They are in force for the West Cornwall Rivers, Upper, Middle and Lower River Tamar and the River Lynher.

"Flooding is possible during Wednesday evening and into Thursday.

"Since this afternoon (Wednesday), 20mm of rain, blown in by strong southerly winds, has fallen widely over Cornwall.

"The forecast is for 30-40mm falling overnight.

"Rainfall totals up to 70mm are expected on higher ground of Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor.

"The ground is saturated and river levels are responding.

"Flooding of low lying land and roads is possible due to the further rainfall".

The Environment Agency adds: "Unsettled weather is forecast for the next five days.

"We are monitoring river levels and expect to issue further alerts during this time.

"Take care near the areas of concern and monitor your local weather conditions.

" We are monitoring river levels and have staff in the area checking for and clearing blockages".
