Torrential rain has sparked flash flooding on the A30, which closed the Hayle bypass.

Video footage shows parts of the carriageway were barely visible under the surface water.

Officers from the Roads Policing Unit described the flooding as severe, telling Pirate FM it was not safe for drivers.

The road was closed for several hours but officials have now confirmed that it has reopened.

The town centre was also described as being 'under water' and people were being urged to avoid the area, from all directions.

At the height of it, the problems with flash flooding were stretching back to the junction for Camborne West.

It comes as the latest band of heavy downpours sweeps across Cornwall, with reports of thunder and lightning as well.

Two rain warnings are in force - one until Friday lunchtime and the other all day Saturday and Sunday morning: Read More.

"Traffic returned to normal, earlier flooding on A30 Westbound between A3047 (Camborne West, Camborne) and A3074 Nut Lane (St Erth roundabout, Hayle).

"Road re-opened at around 13:45."
