Hayle flash flooding declared a 'major incident'

Hayle flash flooding declared a 'major incident'

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 2:00pm 19th December 2019. (Updated at 10:51am 20th December 2019)

Devon and Cornwall Police have declared a major incident as flash flooding leaves Hayle 'underwater'.

Torrential rain has been battering the Duchy and has sparked a flood warning for the area.

The A30 Hayle bypass was left closed because of the volume of water and part of the town centre is closed too.

The road has now reopened but there is still slow traffic in the area.

Cornwall Council has confirmed that around 50 properties have now been affected by flooding in the area.

"We have four appliances pumping out water in Fore Street, Hayle, which has been affected by severe flash flooding.

"Around 50 premises have been affected by floodwater.

"Devon and Cornwall Police has declared a major incident, we are co-ordinating a multi-agency response to reduce the water levels."

Cornwall Council

Police say the major incident has now been stood down, and the main street through Hayle will be open soon.

"Emergency Services are currently at the scene of what was declared as a major incident earlier today on the A30 at Hayle following severe flooding over both carriageways.

"Highways England were also on the scene and several road closures have been put in place.

"The A30 was re-opened at around 2pm."

Devon and Cornwall Police

"Slow traffic due to earlier flooding on A30 Westbound between A3047 (Camborne West, Camborne) and A3074 Nut Lane (St Erth roundabout, Hayle).

"All lanes have been re-opened.

"Road re-opened at around 13:45, however residual delays remain in the area."

Inrix Traffic and Travel

It comes as the latest band of heavy downpours sweeps across Cornwall, with reports of thunder and lightning as well.

Two rain warnings are in force - one until Friday lunchtime and the other all day Saturday and Sunday morning.
