Car performs u-turn to avoid A30 flooding at Hayle

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 2:31pm 20th December 2019. (Updated at 4:44pm 20th December 2019)

This was the moment a car was caught on camera performing a u-turn on the Hayle bypass as it was hit by severe flooding.

Part of the A30 in the area had to be closed for hours on Thursday it was that bad.

Police declared a major incident as flood water and torrential rain also left Hayle town centre 'under water'.

The Environment Agency also issued a flood warning for the area, urging people to take immediate action. Around 30 properties in the area were affected by the floods.

While all this was going on there were major traffic issues on the A30 because of the closure.

There have been numerous reports of 'dangerous manoeuvres' being performed on the Hayle bypass over many years, including a string of crashes.

This is the moment one driver tried to avoid the queues...

Devon and Cornwall Police data shows that there have been 16 reports of u-turns on the A30 at Hayle over the past two years.

A freedom of information request was submitted, which said:

"I would like to know, if possible please, information about reports sent to the police regarding drivers performing u-turns on the Hayle bypass.

"In particular I'd like to know data for this year and last year in terms of how many reports you received, how many reports were followed up and the results of those reports (i.e. did anyone actually get prosecuted?)"

It comes just months after a new petition was launched, branding u-turns on the Hayle bypass as "illegal and reckless".

Mid-Cornwall Motorcycle Action Group is calling for a dual carriageway between Camborne and St Erth.

Campaigners say that is the only way to ensure the installation of a "desperately needed" central reservation.
