A fire investigation is being carried out after a big blaze broke out at a manor house in Cornwall.

At its height 70 firefighters were battling the fire in Milltown near Lostwithiel.

Flames spread to two floors of the 18th century property and smoke could be seen billowing from the roof of the burning building.

Crews from 21 fire stations were drafted in after the blaze broke out on Saturday morning, along with backup from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service providing cover over the border.

The fire was brought under control at around 7pm on Saturday night and teams stayed on the scene overnight.

Police, paramedics, Cornwall Council Building Control, Cornwall Council Resilience and Emergency Management and Western Power Distribution teams were also called out.

"At 08:53 yesterday morning (Saturday), Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service received a 999 call at our Critical Control Centre, stating that there was a fire in a large manor house in the Lostwithiel area.

"Appliances were dispatched to the scene, initially from Lostwithiel, Fowey and Bodmin and supported by 2 Flexi Duty Officers.

"On arrival, crews were faced with a developing property fire with smoke issuing from the roof. This prompted a request for further resources from across Cornwall, including specialist support vehicles and additional officers and agencies, and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service providing cover on the border.

"This was a multi-agency response and included colleagues from Devon and Cornwall Police, South Western Ambulance Service Foundation Trust, Cornwall Council Building Control, Cornwall Council Resilience and Emergency Management and Western Power Distribution.

"Multiple Breathing Apparatus wearers were deployed to attack the fire, which involved the first floor, second floor and the roof space.

"This was a resource intensive incident and required a concerted and sustained deployment of multiple fire pumps, equipment and teams.

"At its peak over 70 firefighters from 21 Community Fire Stations in Cornwall were on scene. The fire was brought under control at 19:00.

"Two appliances remained in attendance throughout the night dealing with hot spots.

"Fire investigation officers are on scene this morning in an attempt to identify the fire cause and origin".
