Cornwall Samaritans helps those in need over Christmas

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 6:00am 27th December 2019. (Updated at 8:03am 27th December 2019)

A charity for those struggling to cope over the Christmas period in the south west will have access to help 24 hours of the day.

Last Christmas, the Samaritans responded to more than 300,000 calls for help across the country.

The charity says that the festive period can be a tough time for people in terms of stress, loneliness and emotional distress.

On Christmas Eve in 2018, almost 1,650 dedicated Samaritans volunteers were reporting for duty at Samaritans branches across the country.

The following day, over 1,475 Samaritans volunteers headed to branches and responded to thousands of calls for help from people feeling overwhelmed on 25th December.

Each volunteer answered an average of 12 calls per Christmas shift, with callers sharing a wide range of personal challenges from mental and physical health struggles to family issues, relationship problems and isolation and loneliness.

"Our branch, along with 200 other branches, will be open throughout the holiday period and I’d like to thank all the volunteers for their support and dedication".
