Clean up of flood-hit Post Office 'could take weeks'

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 4:55pm 23rd December 2019.

A post office in Hayle has been left so badly damaged after those flash floods it is feared the clean up could take weeks.

A major incident was declared in the town after torrential downpours turned roads into rivers last Thursday.

The A30 bypass even had to be closed.

The Copperhouse Post Office was among dozens of businesses badly damaged by last the heavy rain.

Torrents streamed into shops and properties along the main street.

Sarah Ellis has been speaking to Pirate FM about the damage, admitting it could take weeks to reopen the post office.

"The rain started coming down pretty heavy. The rain started to come in through the front door. We closed the front door and then it just came in, more and more and more water.

"It started to rise above the door and unfortunately the traffic was sending tidal waves, sending the water up through the sides of the door and we flooded from one side to the next.

"It went under the post office counter, destroyed the equipment inside - I think it was a couple of hours before we could actually open the doors and get out safely.

"We're in here now doing a clean-up. All the stock needs lifting and putting somewhere safe so we're bagging all that up at the minute.

"The place is just muddy. It's dry but it's very, very muddy. We've pulled up the tiles from behind the post office counter so we're all hands on".

But the local community still pulled together to save its Christmas post.

Local workers managed to secure a mobile post van for Monday 23rd December, thanks to community spirit and generosity.

Sarah Ellis contacted by Mike, who runs a mobile post office van, and offered his help despite being on holiday!

The local pub, The Cornubia Inn, stepped in as well and now the mobile service is operating out of its car park.

It is hoped that it will run on Friday 27th December too.
