Thunderstorms warning issued for Christmas getaway

Published by Emma Carton at 8:37am 24th December 2019. (Updated at 12:38pm 24th December 2019)

Thunderstorms could threaten Cornwall's Christmas getaway.

A weather warning has been issued for parts of Devon and Somerset, including the M5.

The Met Office says drivers can expect rain, lightning and squally winds until 1pm on Tuesday.

Anyone travelling in and out of the Duchy is being urged to take extra care on the roads.

What can we expect?

  • Probably some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes
  • There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus
  • Delays to train services are possible
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is likely

The Met Office yellow weather warning for thunderstorms will be in force from 5am - 1pm on Christmas Eve.

What is the forecast?

"Heavy showers and some thunderstorms are expected to move east during Tuesday morning.

"These will contain hail, which could briefly cover roads, a risk of lightning and also squally winds with gusts of 60mph possible".
