Flood-hit Cornish town goes back on alert

Flood-hit Cornish town goes back on alert

Published by Emma Carton at 5:05pm 26th December 2019. (Updated at 5:12pm 26th December 2019)

Fresh flood alerts have been issued for Cornwall, including the town of Hayle, after another band of heavy rain.

The Environment Agency says flooding is possible for West Cornwall Rivers, including the River Hayle.

It comes exactly a week after torrential downpours left parts of the town under water, forcing police to declare a major incident.

The torrents streamed into shops and businesses along the main street and, at one point, closed the A30 bypass.

A separate alert is also in force for the south Cornwall coast, from Lizard Point to Gribbin Head, amid fears the strong winds could whip up huge waves.

"Flooding is possible today, Thursday 26th December, and overnight into Friday.

"The ground is saturated and river levels have risen in response to 10mm of rainfall overnight.

"A further band of rain has started to move in from the south-west but this is expected to quickly clear the far west of Cornwall by mid-afternoon today. Drier conditions are forecast to follow on Friday.

"River levels remain high, with flooding of low lying land and roads possible throughout Thursday and Friday, but the situation will start to improve after that.

"Areas particularly at risk include low lying land and roads along the River Hayle.

"Take care near the areas of concern and monitor your local weather conditions.

"We are monitoring river levels and have staff in the area checking for and clearing blockages".
