Major rescue as man scales cliff to reach dropped phone

Coastguards have issued a warning after a recent rescue in Newquay.

Crews say a man made the decision to scale the cliffs above Tolcarne Beach, after dropping his phone.

The casualty slipped and fell 'some distance' after a party in the run-up to Christmas.

Police and the Newquay and Padstow Coastguard Rescue Teams were scrambled at the start of December.

Luckily, despite the fall, the cold weather and the affects of alcohol, the man escaped with bumps and bruises.

Call out #49 0511hrs 02-12-19 Full team page Tolcarne Beach Team tasked to assist Devon & Cornwall Police and Newquay Coastguard with a person stuck on the cliffs, below the Rocklands Apartments, Newquay, approximately 20 metres from the bottom, but 50 metres the top. After attending a christmas party, and unfortunately dropping his phone, they made the decision to climb down to retrieve it, and slipped and fell some distance. A security guard on his final patrol heard his calls for help and alerted the emergency services. The road was closed, and then using urban holdfasts secured to telegraph poles and a block wall pillar, and ESO decided that a cliff rescue extraction would be the best course of action. Two of the team were sent to the base of the cliff with a Police officer, and the Newquay cliff technician then lowered the casualty to the beach. He was then escorted to a waiting South Western Ambulance Service crew, who checked him for serious injuries. Despite the alcohol, distance fallen, and cold weather conditions, the casualty was found to only have bumps and bruises. All crews were then stood down following the onsite debrief, and returned to station at 0630hrs.
