Warning to parents about school application deadline

Warning to parents about school application deadline

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 7:00am 11th January 2020.

Parents in Cornwall are being urged to submit applications for children starting school in 2020.

Time is running out for mums and dads of kids who are due to start in September, to secure their place in a reception class.

All applications for reception children (those who were born between 1st September 2015 and 31st August 2016) must be submitted by midnight on 15th January 2020.

Parents and carers still need to apply for a school place even if their child currently attends the school's nursery or pre-school setting or they have expressed an interest in attending the school.

Sally Hawken, the Council's Cabinet Member for Children and Wellbeing, is encouraging parents and carers to apply on time and to list more than one preference.

"It is really important for parents to get their applications in before the 15 January deadline. Applying late means that their preferred schools may already by full.  We also want to stress to parents that we strongly recommend listing three preferences on the application form.

"Naming a second or third preference does not give you any less chance of getting a place at your preferred school."

How to apply:

Parents and carers of children with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHC Plan) do not need to complete an application form, they will be supported by the Statutory SEN Service (01872 324242).

The online application facility is available on the Council's website at www.cornwall.gov.uk/admissions and is open until midnight on 15th January 2020.

Any parent or carer who does not have access to a computer can visit a One Stop Shop or Library or use the paper form available from the School Admissions Team by telephoning 0300 1234 101.

For support with making an application, the Family Information Service can also help: 0800 587 8191.
