A young man is in a critical condition after a New Year's attack in St Ives.

The casualty in his twenties was rushed to hospital just one hour into 2020.

He suffered a serious head injury after being assaulted by another man on The Terrace.

Police say the suspect was wearing a distinctive pink and yellow Hawaiian shirt, unbuttoned over a white t-shirt.

Officers are urging anyone who might have seen something at around 1am on Wednesday morning to come forward.

He is described as being around 6ft tall, in his early to mid-20s, with short, dark hair and facial stubble or a beard.

The man is said to be of a fit appearance with wide shoulders.

He was in the company of two other men who walked off in the direction of Carbis Bay.

"Police would like to hear from anyone who was in the area who witnessed the assault.

"Specifically, we would like to speak to the man wearing the Hawaiian shirt or two friends he was in company with on New Year's Eve".

Detective Inspector Glenn Willcocks
